Applied Anthropology Minor

This minor provides students with a practical toolkit for problem solving using an anthropological way of seeing and doing. Anthropology engages human diversity through research and application. With this minor, students will expand their cross-cultural awareness and learn to put anthropological methods to work. Through better understanding both past and present, students will learn how to engage with communities, environments, resources, and organizations, and gain experience in how to foster systemic change. Given anthropology’s interdisciplinary approach, this minor is an excellent complement to a wide range of student majors and interests, including engineering, business, environmental science, mass communications, cultural resource management and museum studies, public health and health sciences, architecture, system design, and computer science.

Minor Requirements
The minor in Applied Anthropology consists of a minimum of 15 credit hours. Students have to take the two Core courses and at least 1 Methods course. ANT 2410 Cultural Anthropology and ANT 3101 Archaeology are both good entry courses into this minor, and act as prerequisites for many of the methods courses. Students may also take certain electives to fulfill the 15 credit hours. Required Minor Courses: 9 credit hours
Students must take the two required core courses and at least 3 credits of a designated ANT methodology course. Minor Core Courses (6 credits)
Required Methods Elective
Required Methods Elective (3-9 credits) Students must take at least one Method Course from the Methods Subfield List. To increase student acquisition of applied skills, students can take up to 9 credit hours in Methods. Please note that many methods courses have prerequisites such as ANT 2410 Cultural Anthropology and ANT 3101 Archaeology. Minor Elective Credit Hours (0-6 credits)
Any of the electives listed below count towards the Applied Anthropology minor. ANT 3101 Archaeology acts as a prerequisite for many methods courses. To gain practical experience, students are encouraged to find an internship and use ANT 4940 Anthropology Internship to gain credit towards the minor.
Please note that for ANT 4930 Special Topics to count towards this requirement, the Special Topic class must be related to applied anthropology. Applied Anthropology ANT 4930 courses include Cultural Resource Management, Human Growth and Development, Environmental Justice, Ecofeminism, Nutritional Anthropology, Ancestral Landscapes: Heritage and Community Archaeology, and other related courses.
GPA Requirements
A 2.0 GPA is required for the minor.
Grading Requirements
A C (2.0) average is required for the minor.
Residency Requirements
Fifty percent (50%) of the minor must be completed through USF coursework.
